Is anyone else getting really sick of...
... President Bush always saying the same things? "We are committed to helping the people of Iraq/Louisiana/Afghanistan/Mississippi," "[name of official who's screwed up royally recently] is doing a heck of a job," or "a bang-up job," "We're making progress," etc. Perhaps since I disagree with him I'm predisposed to being cynical, but I can't even believe he believes what he's saying anymore. It's like they put a tape recorder in an automaton, seriously.

And now I hear Haliburton has been hired to do a lot of the cleanup after the hurricane. Because you know, they did such a great job not cheating the government in Iraq... Well, actually they aren't getting the big contract, just one from the navy. Here're the details as best I could find them:

"The Navy has hired Houston-based Halliburton Co. to restore electric power, repair roofs and remove debris at three naval facilities in Mississippi damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

Halliburton subsidiary KBR will also perform damage assessments at other naval installations in New Orleans as soon as it is safe to do so.

KBR was assigned the work under a "construction capabilities" contract awarded in 2004 after a competitive bidding process. The company is not involved in the Army Corps of Engineers' effort to repair New Orleans' levees."

Still, you'd think there'd be some sort of clause where if you're caught bilking the government (and by extension, people who pay taxes) for large sums of money you wouldn't ever get government work again. Maybe that'd be way too sensible though.

[EDIT:] Hey, you never know, maybe we'll get lucky and get Bush to sell his ranch.

It's surprising how little a role common sense plays in our government.
